Excellent article, Neil, and beautifully written. Reading this makes me think about my own childhood home- a little red house built by my father half a world away. I haven't been there in 10 years, but I know she's still standing and that the neighborhood hasn't changed too much...thanks to GoogleEarth!

Everything we do or did finds a place in a memory somewhere. Going back to visit the past helps us believe in ourselves, and reminds us that our home is always with us, as you said. I visited my childhood home in Caribou a couple of years ago with my 2 travelling buddies (We visited all 3 homes.) and the exerience was pretty amazing. I actually just planned to stop and say hello, since we saw people in the yard as we drove by. But when I introduced myself and told them who my father was (very well known and respected in town) they practically jumped at the chance to show us around: a very thorough walk around the yard and then the inside as well. It was a happy time for me, even if I didn't appreciate their knocking my bedroom wall down to make the kitchen bigger.
Have Tonya bring you down to West St. She would have lots of stories to share with you from there. The "new" owner, Holly, would welcome you, I'm sure.
